// how it works

How it works

  1. Decide your setup

    Choose a local install (Windows, Linux, macOS) or Docker, and whether to use the ComfyUI or AUTOMATIC1111 backend.

  2. Get the installer or clone

    Download the install script for your OS from the repo, or clone it manually if you prefer full control.

  3. Install and configure

    Run the installer; it sets up .NET and dependencies, then opens an install page where you pick a backend and download models.

  4. Generate your first image

    Open the Generate tab, enter a prompt, and generate — then explore the image editor and Grid Generator.

// features

Why people love it

Generate tab

A friendly main interface for text-to-image generation with powerful convenience features built in.

Comfy Workflow tab

Access the unrestricted raw ComfyUI graph for advanced, node-based workflows.

Multiple backends

Can auto-install ComfyUI or AUTOMATIC1111's webui, or connect to remote servers and the Stability AI API.

Swarm of GPUs

Designed to let multiple GPUs generate images for the same user at once, especially for large grid generations.

Built-in image editor

Edit generated images without leaving the UI, alongside tools like the Grid Generator.

Cross-platform installers

One-click style install scripts for Windows and Linux, a macOS flow for Apple silicon, and a Docker launch script.

// run it

Run it yourself

  1. Clone the repository

    Clone the project and enter its directory.

    git clone https://github.com/Stability-AI/StableSwarmUI.git
    cd StableSwarmUI
  2. Launch the installer (Linux)

    On Linux, the launch script installs dependencies and starts the server; Windows users run launch-windows.bat and macOS users launch-macos.sh instead.

    ./launch-linux.sh
  3. Open the install page

    If the browser does not open automatically, visit the install page and follow the on-page setup to pick a backend and models.

Questions, answered

Who maintains StableSwarmUI?

It was created under Stability AI; per the README's migration notice, since June 2024 the original developer maintains an independent version (SwarmUI by mcmonkeyprojects), and this repository is no longer maintained under Stability AI.

Is StableSwarmUI free?

Yes. It is open source under the MIT license, though some optional backends and models it can install carry their own licenses (for example ComfyUI is GPL and AUTOMATIC1111's webui is AGPL).

Does it need a paid API key?

No — it runs locally with local backends and models. A paid key is only needed if you choose to connect the optional Stability AI API backend.

How does it compare to AUTOMATIC1111's webui?

StableSwarmUI is a modular front-end that can actually use AUTOMATIC1111's webui as one of its backends; compared with using A1111 alone, Swarm adds a cleaner Generate UI, a built-in ComfyUI graph tab, and multi-GPU 'swarm' generation.

How do I get started?

Run the installer for your OS (install-linux.sh, Install-Windows.bat, or launch-macos.sh), complete the on-page install at http://localhost:7801/Install, then generate from the Generate tab.
