// how it works

How it works

  1. Install from the release page

    Copy the single install command for your OS from the latest GitHub Release — it builds the pinned release locally.

  2. Sign in with GitHub

    Connect the GitHub account that has Copilot access; analysis runs through the bundled Copilot CLI.

  3. Record a task

    Press the record shortcut, do the task naturally (optionally narrating), and stop the recording.

  4. Analyze and generate

    Click Analyze to reconstruct intent and steps, then generate a Skill or schedule an Automation from it.

// features

Why people love it

Rich session capture

Clicks, app and window switches, browser URLs on macOS, clipboard previews, optional terminal recording, and narrated intent.

Intent reconstruction

Copilot rebuilds what you were trying to do and the ordered steps, rather than storing a raw click log.

Skill generation

Produces SKILL.md skills that prefer native agent tools and generalize from one demonstration.

Scheduled automations

Turn a recorded workflow into an Automation that runs on a schedule.

Privacy-conscious design

Data stays local until you click Analyze; narration transcription runs on-device with Whisper.

Pinned, reproducible installs

Release installs build an exact commit with a pinned Node runtime and a pinned Copilot CLI — nothing global.

// run it

Run it yourself

  1. Clone the repository

    Clone the project and enter its directory (for development; end users install from the release page).

    git clone https://github.com/microsoft/skill-recorder.git
    cd skill-recorder
  2. Install for development

    Install dependencies and run the app in dev mode (Node.js 24 required). End users should use the one-command installer on the latest GitHub Release page.

    npm ci
    npm run dev
  3. Record your first task

    In the app, press the record shortcut (macOS: Cmd+Shift+R; Windows: Ctrl+Shift+R), perform the task, stop, then click Analyze.

Questions, answered

Who maintains Skill Recorder?

Microsoft publishes Skill Recorder as an open-source project.

Is it free?

The app is MIT-licensed, but it requires a GitHub account with Copilot access, since analysis uses the bundled GitHub Copilot CLI.

Does it need a paid API key?

It needs GitHub Copilot access (a paid Copilot plan) rather than a raw API key; recording itself is local and free.

How does it compare to RPA tools or screen-recording macros?

Recorders replay exact clicks and break when UIs change. Skill Recorder reconstructs intent and generates skills that prefer native tools and generalize — closer to teaching than to macro playback.

How do I get started?

Copy the install command for your OS from the latest GitHub Release page, sign in with a Copilot-enabled GitHub account, and record a task.
