// how it works

How it works

  1. Install the desktop app

    Download the installer for macOS or Windows from the latest release - Codex CLI is included and no Node.js is needed.

  2. Connect your model access

    On first launch the app starts its local runtime and can reuse a working ChatGPT sign-in or API key from your local Codex configuration, or you configure another provider in the guided form.

  3. Pick a tool or just ask

    Open a creator tool from the Dashboard (video translation, thumbnail, dubbing and more) or describe a task in the agent composer and let a Run work in the background.

  4. Review, revise and export

    Adjust subtitles, shots and settings in the visual workspace or ask for changes in conversation; every revision creates a new version, and you export SRT, audio, video or documents when satisfied.

// features

Why people love it

Video translation at scale

Import local or public videos, transcribe with cloud or local Whisper, translate with LLM context for segmentation and terminology, and export bilingual subtitles, dubbing or a custom voice in landscape or portrait.

Ten creator tools in one workspace

Video translation and downloader, thumbnail generator, image generation, article writer, Xiaohongshu posts, short-video scripts, stick-figure animation, smart dubbing and video generation.

Codex-native agent engine

Reuses the Codex agent loop, models, tool calls, Skills and MCP instead of maintaining a second execution engine, with approvals managed in the workspace.

Visual workspace plus conversation

Creator tools and agent chat are two views of one workflow state machine, so steps, progress and results stay synchronized whichever you use.

Reusable Skills

Ships video-production Skills (subtitles, TTS, landscape/portrait rendering, covers, pipeline planning) and supports your own Codex Skills defined in SKILL.md.

Local-first with versioning

Data, attachments and logs stay local by default, memory is kept per global/project/thread, and every revision creates a new version instead of overwriting earlier outputs.

// run it

Run it yourself

  1. Clone the repository

    Clone OpenCreator to run the web version from source or develop on it; desktop users can skip this and install the release build.

    git clone https://github.com/krillinai/OpenCreator.git
    cd OpenCreator
  2. Install dependencies

    Enable corepack and install the workspace dependencies (Node.js 22+ and pnpm 9.15 required, plus a Codex CLI login for real model tasks).

    corepack enable
    pnpm install
  3. Run the web app

    Start the development server and open the workspace in your browser; the local daemon starts on demand.

    pnpm web:dev
    # then open http://127.0.0.1:19861/

Questions, answered

Who maintains OpenCreator?

It is developed by the krillinai team and contributors; the project was formerly known as KrillinAI.

Is OpenCreator free?

The software is Apache-2.0 licensed and free. Real model tasks require a usable ChatGPT sign-in or API key, and media generation uses the AI services you configure - some local options such as Edge TTS need no key.

Does it need a paid API key?

For agent and generation features, yes in practice: a Codex login (ChatGPT sign-in or API key) powers the agent, and image/video/voice services use credentials you set in Settings, AI Services.

How does it compare with using Codex or a video editor alone?

OpenCreator wraps Codex in a creator-focused visual workspace with ready-made media tools, templates and versioning, instead of a bare terminal agent or a manual editing timeline.

How do I get started?

Download the desktop app, let it reuse your Codex sign-in on first launch, and start from a creator tool or a plain-language request in the composer.
