// how it works

How it works

  1. Install the apps

    Download Joplin for your desktop and phone from joplinapp.org — notes are stored locally and work fully offline.

  2. Choose your sync

    Pick a sync target in settings — Nextcloud, Dropbox, OneDrive, Joplin Cloud or a self-hosted Joplin Server — and enable end-to-end encryption if you want the server to store only ciphertext.

  3. Clip and organise

    Add the Joplin Web Clipper to your browser to save pages and screenshots straight into notebooks, and extend the app with community plugins and themes.

// features

Why people love it

Offline-first, everywhere

Full native apps on desktop and mobile; your complete notebook is on-device, internet or not.

Encrypted sync, your choice of backend

Sync via Nextcloud, file sync, Joplin Cloud or your own Joplin Server — with end-to-end encryption available.

Plain Markdown notes

Notes are Markdown with full-text search, tags, to-dos and attachments; Evernote imports are handled natively.

Clipper, plugins, themes

A browser web clipper for research, and a plugin ecosystem that reshapes the app around your workflow.

// run it

Run it yourself

  1. Download the apps

    Desktop and mobile installers from the official site.

    https://joplinapp.org/download
  2. Self-host the sync server (optional)

    Joplin Server ships as a Docker image for those who want sync on their own hardware.

    docker run -d --name joplin-server -p 22300:22300 joplin/server:latest
  3. Enable E2EE

    In any Joplin app: Settings → Encryption → enable, set a password, and let each device unlock once.

Questions, answered

Who makes Joplin?

Laurent Cozic and a large open-source community (laurent22/joplin on GitHub); Joplin Cloud is the optional paid service that helps fund it.

Is Joplin free?

The apps are free and open source — check the repository for licence terms. Joplin Cloud, the hosted sync option, is a paid subscription; self-hosting sync is free.

Are my notes really private?

Notes live on your devices; with end-to-end encryption enabled, sync servers only hold encrypted data. Without E2EE, privacy depends on the sync provider you chose.

How does it compare to a well-known alternative?

Against Evernote, Joplin is open source, offline-first and free with your own sync, at the cost of Evernote polish in areas like OCR search. Against Obsidian, Joplin is fully open source with built-in sync targets and to-dos; Obsidian counters with its graph and plugin depth — and a commercial core.

How do I get started?

Install the desktop and mobile apps from joplinapp.org, create notebooks, then turn on the sync target of your choice.
