// how it works

How it works

  1. Choose cloud or self-hosted

    Start instantly on InsForge Cloud, or self-host: run the setup script to fetch the stack and generate secrets, then bring it up with Docker Compose.

  2. Review your configuration

    Set the API base URLs in .env so browsers can reach your instance, and keep the generated admin password and access keys safe.

  3. Connect your coding agent

    Open the local dashboard and follow the steps to connect the InsForge MCP server to your agent (the CLI-plus-skills interface is cloud-only).

  4. Verify and build

    Ask your agent to call the MCP fetch-docs tool to confirm the connection, then have it create tables, auth providers, buckets and functions for your app.

// features

Why people love it

Agent-native interfaces

An MCP server exposes InsForge operations as tools any MCP-compatible agent can call; on cloud, a CLI paired with skills offers a second interface.

Complete backend primitives

Postgres database, user authentication and sessions, S3-compatible file storage, Deno edge functions, compute containers (private preview) and site deployment in one platform.

Model gateway

An OpenAI-compatible API across multiple LLM providers, so apps get one endpoint for AI features.

Agents can see and debug state

Agents can pull documentation, schemas, metadata (deployed functions, bucket contents, auth config) and runtime logs to verify and debug what they built.

Real configuration power

Agents can deploy edge functions, run database migrations, create storage buckets and set up auth providers directly.

Flexible storage backends

Store files on the local filesystem by default, or back storage with bundled MinIO/RustFS or any S3-compatible store (AWS S3, R2, Wasabi and more), with one-click deploys to Railway, Zeabur and others.

// run it

Run it yourself

  1. Clone the repository

    Clone InsForge if you want to build from source; the setup script path below is the recommended self-host route.

    git clone https://github.com/InsForge/InsForge.git
    cd InsForge
  2. Set up a self-hosted instance

    Fetch the stack files and generate secrets (JWT, encryption key, Postgres and admin passwords, access keys) into ~/insforge/.env.

    curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/InsForge/InsForge/main/deploy/setup.sh | sh -s ~/insforge
  3. Start it and connect MCP

    Bring the stack up with Docker Compose, then open the dashboard to connect the MCP server to your agent.

    cd ~/insforge
    docker compose up -d
    # then open http://localhost:7130

Questions, answered

Who maintains InsForge?

InsForge is an open-source project by the InsForge team, with a hosted cloud at insforge.dev and community support on Discord.

Is InsForge free?

The platform code is Apache-2.0 licensed and self-hosting is free; the hosted cloud is a separate service - check insforge.dev for its current plans.

Does it need a paid API key?

InsForge itself does not require one to self-host. The model gateway fronts LLM providers, so AI features in your apps use whichever provider accounts you connect.

How does InsForge compare with Supabase or Firebase?

Those platforms were designed for human developers first; InsForge is designed agent-first, exposing backend operations as MCP tools and skills so coding agents can operate the backend end to end.

How do I get started?

Run the setup script, docker compose up -d, open http://localhost:7130, and connect the MCP server to your coding agent.
