// how it works

How it works

  1. Check the prerequisites

    You need IDA Pro (paid, 8.3+, ideally 9.x) with Python 3.11+ available to IDA, plus uv, and an MCP client you already use.

  2. Install the server

    Use the plugin marketplace install for Claude Code or Codex, or install the package manually and run ida-pro-mcp --install to configure clients and the IDA plugin.

  3. Restart everything

    Completely restart IDA and your MCP client (some clients run in the background) so the new server is picked up.

  4. Analyze your first binary

    Open a binary in IDA (or headless with idalib-mcp), then prompt the LLM with a structured strategy: inspect decompilation, rename and comment as it learns, and write up findings.

// features

Why people love it

Decompilation and disassembly tools

The LLM can decompile functions, disassemble with full details, list functions, globals and imports, and follow cross-references in your database.

Database improvement workflow

Prompts are designed so the agent renames variables and functions, corrects types (especially pointers and arrays) and documents findings as comments directly in the IDB.

Headless idalib mode

idalib-mcp opens binaries without the GUI, keeps each database in its own persistent worker, and can adopt a running GUI instance for the same file.

Many transports and clients

Works over stdio, SSE and HTTP with dozens of MCP clients, and ida-pro-mcp --config prints the JSON config for any other client.

MCP resources for IDB state

Browsable resources expose IDB metadata, segments, entry points, cursor and selection, types and structures, and import/export/xref lookups.

Accuracy helpers

A dedicated int_convert tool handles number-base conversions the README warns LLMs fumble, with guidance on deobfuscation steps to take before analysis.

// run it

Run it yourself

  1. Clone the repository

    Clone IDA Pro MCP if you want the source; installation is usually done via your client's plugin marketplace or the package installer.

    git clone https://github.com/mrexodia/ida-pro-mcp.git
    cd ida-pro-mcp
  2. Install for Claude Code

    Add the author's marketplace and install the plugin (Codex has an equivalent marketplace flow in the README).

    claude plugin marketplace add mrexodia/claude-marketplace
    claude plugin install ida-pro-mcp@mrexodia
  3. Or run headless with idalib

    After activating idalib, start the headless server on a binary - no IDA GUI required.

    uv run idalib-mcp --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8745 path/to/executable

Questions, answered

Who maintains IDA Pro MCP?

It is maintained by mrexodia (Duncan Ogilvie) and contributors. The README recommends also considering the official Hex-Rays IDA MCP server, announced by Hex-Rays.

Is it free to use?

The MCP server is MIT-licensed and free, but it requires a paid IDA Pro license - IDA Free is explicitly not supported.

Does it need a paid API key?

The server itself needs no key; the LLM you connect (Claude, GPT and so on) uses your own client subscription or API key.

How does it compare with the official Hex-Rays MCP server?

Hex-Rays now ships its own official server; this community project predates it, supports a wide range of clients and adds a headless idalib mode with persistent workers - try both and keep the one that fits your workflow.

How do I get started?

Install it from your client's plugin marketplace (or pip-install the package and run ida-pro-mcp --install), restart IDA and the client, and open a binary.
