// how it works

How it works

  1. Install EverOS

    Install the everos package with uv or pip on the machine that will hold the memory.

  2. Initialize and add one key

    Run everos init to create ~/.everos/everos.toml, then paste an OpenRouter API key into the [llm] section - that alone unlocks the core Tier 1 memory flow.

  3. Start the server

    Launch everos server start and confirm it with the /health endpoint; capabilities you have not configured report as false and return clear errors if requested.

  4. Add, flush and search memory

    Post a conversation to /api/v2/memory/add, flush the session to durable Markdown, then search it back - and open ~/.everos to inspect the actual memory files.

// features

Why people love it

Markdown-native durable memory

Memories persist as plain Markdown files you own and can read, edit and move - the local files are the source of truth, not an opaque database.

Local-first and portable

One memory layer shared across apps, tools and workflows, running on your machine under your control.

Tiered capabilities

Start with LLM-only keyword search; add an embedding provider for hybrid search, reflection and skill extraction, a reranker for agentic search, and multimodal parsing for images, PDFs, audio and office files.

Simple REST memory API

Add, flush and search endpoints under /api/v2/memory, with session, app and project scoping for multi-app setups.

Self-evolving memory

With the embedding tier, EverOS supports reflection and skill extraction, so memory improves and reusable skills emerge across tasks.

Broad integration ecosystem

Plugins and integrations for coding CLIs and agent frameworks, including Claude Code, OpenClaw, Hermes Agent, DeepSeek Harness and Dify.

// run it

Run it yourself

  1. Clone the repository

    Clone EverOS if you want to develop on it or try the contributor demo; most users install the package instead.

    git clone https://github.com/EverMind-AI/EverOS.git
    cd EverOS
  2. Install and initialize

    Install the package, then initialize your memory root and add your OpenRouter key to ~/.everos/everos.toml.

    pip install everos # or: uv pip install everos
    everos init
  3. Start the server

    Start EverOS and verify it is healthy before wiring it into your agent.

    everos server start
    curl http://127.0.0.1:8000/health

Questions, answered

Who maintains EverOS?

EverOS is developed by EverMind-AI (EverMind) and its open-source ecosystem contributors.

Is EverOS free to use?

Yes. It is Apache-2.0 licensed and self-hosted on your own machine.

Does it need a paid API key?

The standard Tier 1 setup uses one OpenRouter key for the memory-extraction LLM, so you pay that provider's usage; the project also ships a no-key educational demo for contributors (uv run everos demo --plain).

How does EverOS compare with Mem0 or a vector database?

EverOS stores memory as user-owned Markdown files with a local runtime and tiered search (keyword, hybrid, agentic), rather than keeping memories primarily as embeddings in a hosted or embedded vector store.

How do I get started?

Install everos, run everos init, add an OpenRouter key, start the server, and post your first conversation to /api/v2/memory/add.
