// how it works

How it works

  1. Clarify your production goal

Decide what you are making — a short drama series, an ad, a product video or an interactive story — and gather your manuscript or screenplay.

  2. Get the code

Clone the main repository (and the bundled gateway repo if you build from source) and copy .env.example to .env.

  3. Install and configure

Set PROMPT_EXPORT_PASSWORD in .env and choose a model route: paste an official DC key, or initialize the bundled gateway and add your own provider channels.

  4. Run your first production

Start the stack, drop your manuscript into a Series project, and let the pipeline plan episodes, draw storyboards and cut a first finished episode.

Why people love it

Series pipeline (XiaJi)

Drop in a manuscript or screenplay and DramaClaw structures the story, plans episodes, writes scripts, draws storyboards and first frames, synthesizes voice-over and cuts the final film.

XiaHua infinite canvas

A node-based workbench with 18 node types — image, video, audio, script, 3D world, export and more — to generate, edit and connect assets freely.

Image and video toolset

Generate, edit, redraw, outpaint, relight and upscale images; text, image and keyframe to video, video editing, erase, upscale and camera templates.

Director World 3D sets

Turn an image into a 3D Gaussian Splat set or scene-360 panorama so the same location stays spatially consistent across shots.

Asset library and identity consistency

Characters, scenes, props and voices are organized by purpose and folder, keeping stable identities across episodes with per-episode variants.

Built-in agent and MCP access

The Xia Director agent builds and runs canvas workflows with your approval, and a local MCP server exposes DramaClaw to Claude Code, Codex and other MCP clients.

Questions, answered

Who maintains DramaClaw?

The dramaclaw team maintains it in the dramaclaw/dramaclaw repository; it is the same production line the team says it runs itself every day.

Is DramaClaw free to use?

The code is under the Elastic License 2.0: the standalone version is free for commercial use, but wrapping it as a hosted SaaS for others is not permitted by the license.

Does it need a paid API key?

You need model access: either an official DC key from the project's relay service, or your own upstream provider channels configured in the bundled gateway.

How does it compare to Runway or Pika?

Those are hosted, per-clip generation services. DramaClaw is a self-hosted, end-to-end pipeline — script, assets, storyboards, voice and edit — that you run on your own infrastructure.

How do I get started?

Clone the repo, copy .env.example to .env, set PROMPT_EXPORT_PASSWORD, add a model key, and run docker compose up -d --build.
