// how it works

How it works

  1. Clarify your goal

    Decide which ComfyUI workflow you want to run as code, outside the node editor.

  2. Get the project

    Clone the repository, ideally straight into ComfyUI's custom_nodes folder so ComfyUI can discover it as an extension.

  3. Install and configure

    Install the extension into the same Python environment that launches ComfyUI, set COMFYUI_PATH if the repo lives elsewhere, and restart ComfyUI.

  4. Run your first task

    Build a workflow in ComfyUI, choose File -> Save As Script to download a Python version, or export in API format and convert it with the CLI.

// features

Why people love it

UI export via Save As Script

Current ComfyUI builds can download a generated .py file directly from File -> Save As Script, with the workflow metadata kept for drag-and-drop reimport.

CLI exporter for API workflows

Convert a saved API-format workflow JSON into Python with the comfyui_to_python module, choosing input file, output file, and queue size.

Works inside or outside custom_nodes

Clone into custom_nodes, symlink the repo in, or register its parent directory through extra_model_paths.yaml search paths.

Reuses the ComfyUI runtime

Generated scripts bootstrap through ComfyUI itself and accept its usual memory flags such as --highvram, --lowvram, and --cpu.

Model and cache cleanup options

Exported scripts clean up models and caches after a run, and can unload models aggressively when embedded in a host application.

Portable-build friendly

Documented setup for the Windows portable build using its embedded Python interpreter, plus uv-based installs for source checkouts.

// run it

Run it yourself

  1. Clone the extension

    Clone it where ComfyUI can find it, or anywhere if you only need the CLI exporter.

    git clone https://github.com/pydn/ComfyUI-to-Python-Extension.git
    cd ComfyUI-to-Python-Extension
  2. Install dependencies and point at ComfyUI

    Sync the project with uv and tell the exporter where your ComfyUI checkout lives.

    uv sync
    export COMFYUI_PATH=/path/to/ComfyUI
  3. Convert a workflow and run it

    Export a workflow in API format from ComfyUI, convert it, then run the generated script.

    uv run python -m comfyui_to_python --input_file workflow_api.json --output_file workflow_api.py
    python workflow_api.py

Questions, answered

Who maintains it?

It is maintained by pydn on GitHub, as an open-source community project.

Is it free to use?

Yes. It is MIT-licensed, so you can use, modify, and redistribute it freely, including commercially.

Does it need a paid API key?

No API key is involved. You do need a working ComfyUI installation with its own models and runtime dependencies such as PyTorch.

How does it compare to a well-known alternative?

ComfyUI itself is the visual node editor; this extension is the bridge that converts what you build there into standalone Python, rather than a competing editor.

How do I get started?

Clone it into ComfyUI/custom_nodes, install it into ComfyUI's Python environment, restart ComfyUI, then use File -> Save As Script on any workflow.
