// how it works

How it works

  1. Pick an API or website

    Choose the service you want a CLI for — a documented API, or a site whose traffic can be sniffed.

  2. Install the press

    Install both the generator binary and the Printing Press skills; each side needs the other.

  3. Start a printing session

    Launch your agent (Claude Code recommended) and invoke the /printing-press command with your target.

  4. Verify and publish

    Review the generated CLI's quality score and verification proofs, then publish it to the library if you want to share it.

// features

Why people love it

Full-surface generation

Generates the complete API surface plus the best features of competing tools, then adds compound insight commands.

Local SQLite data layer

Printed CLIs sync data into domain-specific SQLite tables with FTS5 search, so queries and compound commands work offline in milliseconds.

Dual interface

Every run produces both a Cobra CLI (`-pp-cli`) and an MCP server (`-pp-mcp`) from one spec, sharing client, store, and auth.

No spec required

Point it at a website and it captures browser traffic to reverse-engineer the API and generate a spec.

Agent-native output

Auto-JSON when piped, --compact modes that cut token use, typed exit codes, and --dry-run for safe exploration.

Verified, not vibes

Four mechanical checks — scorecard, dogfood, proof-of-behavior, and a live API smoke test — run before a CLI ships.

// run it

Run it yourself

  1. Clone the repository

    Clone for the developer path, or use the installer in the next step for normal installs.

    git clone https://github.com/mvanhorn/cli-printing-press.git
    cd cli-printing-press
  2. Install binary and skills

    The installer runs `go install` for the generator and refreshes the Printing Press skills (Go 1.26.6+, Node/npm required).

    curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mvanhorn/cli-printing-press/main/scripts/install.sh | bash
    cli-printing-press --version
  3. Print your first CLI

    Start Claude Code and invoke the press with an API name or a website URL.

Questions, answered

Who maintains CLI Printing Press?

Developer mvanhorn; the approach credits Peter Steinberger's discrawl and gogcli tools as the playbook it automates.

Is it free?

Yes — the generator is MIT-licensed and the printed CLIs are yours. You will typically need a Claude Code (or Codex) setup to drive the skills, which may involve your own subscription.

Does it need a paid API key?

The press itself needs no key, but printing a CLI for a service usually requires that service's own credentials for live verification, and the agent driving it uses your existing Claude Code/Codex access.

How does it compare to OpenAPI generator tools?

Typical generators wrap endpoints and stop. The Printing Press also studies competing tools, adds a local SQLite sync/search layer and compound commands, verifies behavior mechanically, and emits both a CLI and an MCP server.

How do I get started?

Run the install script (or `go install github.com/mvanhorn/cli-printing-press/v4/cmd/cli-printing-press@latest` plus the skills), then start Claude Code and run `/printing-press <API or URL>`.
